The most paranoid is the Peter Guttman algorithm which writes several different pat terns including random data to a drive 35 complete passes. There are several programs that comply with DOD and other agenci es requirements to write many patterns many times to wipe a disk. There are reaso ns for the paranoia associated with formatting a drive and giving the compu ter away.
